Planning reliability in LED lighting

Among other things, maintenance factors are decisive for the planning of a lighting system. The designer must determine and document how the luminous flux of a lighting system has decreased at a selected point in time and recommend suitable maintenance measures. In lighting design with LED luminaires, the lamp luminous flux maintenance factor (LLMF) and the lamp survival factor (LSF) can be established as the basis for evaluating LED luminaires for various luminous flux classes over the operating period, which is specified in hours.

Decreasing brightness instead of total failure

Unlike conventional light sources, LEDs practically do not fail. Instead, their brightness slowly decreases, partly because the semiconductor crystal has more and more imperfections. Over the course of their service life, LED modules lose "luminosity" due to chemical-physical changes. This aging, also called degradation (degradation = gradual decrease in luminous flux), is influenced by the following factors:

• Operating temperature
• Ambient temperature
• Supply of constant current
• Type of semiconductor
• Clouding of the optics

LED Strips and Accessories

LED Suspended Spotlight

Light dramatugy is considered an important sales promotion tool, and therefore influences the selection of luminaires, light sources and lighting control. In store lighting, LED technology pays for itself after a short time thanks to impressively low energy consumption and an extremely long service life. One of the most important instruments here is the lighting dramaturgy. Above all, the luminaires with their differentiated properties, such as light color and color rendering, together with contrasts and light distribution, determine the effect the room atmosphere has on customers: a cool impression in a technology-oriented
store or rather warm-toned when clothing or leather goods are offered, exclusively in noble white or with dynamic color effects.

LED surface mounted and recessed luminaires are becoming more and more popular. One of the main reasons for this is their efficiency. They provide the luminosity of a conventional lamp, but consume much less energy. Moreover, LED lights are available with a wide variety of light temperatures, so you can find exactly the right model for every need. The special feature of recessed luminaires is that they are recessed into the ceiling and almost disappear into it. This means that the focus is on the light produced, not on the lamp itself. Compared to floor lamps or ceiling washers, the flat lights have the advantage that they do not take up any space. Thus, they are also, but not only, a good solution for small spaces. Except for living rooms, LED recessed spotlights are often used in offices or business premises. Cold white LEDs are recommended for the workplace, while a cozy warm white light is a better choice at home.

Downlight

Downlight has established itself as a name for mostly round ceiling lights equipped with reflectors and other optical elements. Downlights, including swiveling ones, are designed for recessed ceiling mounting (recessed downlights) or surface mounting (surface-mounted downlights). Recessed ceiling luminaires are suitable for mounting in cavities or false ceilings. Most of the luminaire is not visibly installed in the ceiling, and often the light emission opening is flush with the ceiling. Luminaires for mounting directly on the ceiling are surface-mounted ceiling luminaires. Their luminaire body is visible. Visible luminaire bodies act as part of the room furnishings, and are thus also means of architectural design. Depending on the design of the reflector, different luminous intensity distributions and beam angles are created.
